Chinese variety of abundant, sweet fruit with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Nutritional and decorative plant used for centuries in the traditional Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Tibetan medicine. It is a primitive vine native to eastern Asia, with supple shoots growing up to 2-2,5 m. Leaves are lanceolate, 6 cm long. Small purple flowers 0,7-2 cm in diameter, bloom from June until August. The orange-red fruit commonly known as Goji berries, is 1-1,5 cm long and 0,7 cm in diameter. Ripening from August till October, and when fully ripe are edible fresh or dried. The berries are sweet with a slightly bitter aftertaste, rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The fruit may be also added to various foods or drinks (e.g. tea). Fructification starts 1-2 years after planting. The plant is frost hardy, undemanding and will grow even in a poor soil. It prefers sunny sites. It may be left without support to arch gently or train them like the climbing rose over supports, e.g. trellises.
