Latin name: Cornus mas 'Jolico'
English name: Cornelian Cherry Dogwood 'Jolico'
DECORATION FORM: leaves, edible fruits
Flowering month: IV-V
Evergreen plant: No
Density on 1 m2: 1
Annual growth: 0,5 m
Aspect: do
Frost hardiness: Zones 5 - 7

Resistant, ornamental tall shrub yielding nutritious fruit. The cultivar is recommended for all types of house gardens.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Leaves ovate, 4-10 cm long, pointy, green and turning brown-red in autumn. Flowers small, yellow, gathered in round umbels, melliferous; they precede the leaves in III. Fruit edible and nutritious; sweet-sour tasting, red; ripening gradually in VIII and IX. Plants yield more fruit when at least two different cultivars are placed next to each other.

HOW IT GROWS: A tall shrub or a small tree of spreading or upright habit. Reaches 3-5 m height; grows slowly.

WHERE TO PLANT: Grows and yields fruit both in sunny and semi-shaded spots. Tolerates average, well-drained soil of neutral or acidic pH. Withstands draughts. Frost hardy (zone 5-8).

HOW TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN: Before planting immerse the plant container in water for 10-30 min.  Place the root ball in a 60 x 60 x 60 cm hole with a 10 cm layer of well-rotten manure. Fill the hole with fertile compost soil. Flatten the earth around the plant and cover with bark mulch. Place the root ball as deep as it was in the container. Fertilize from April and water adequately during growing season. The shrub does not require regular pruning. A light pruning can be performed once the plant thickens after a couple of seasons. Excessive pruning limits the fruitification.

HOW TO APPLY: An all-purpose plant suitable for house gardens and park settings. Fruit can be eaten raw or used to make tinctures, jams and compote. They have health-promoting properties.
