Nanking Cherry

Latin name: Prunus tomentosa
English name: Nanking Cherry
DECORATION FORM: flowers and fruits
Flowers colour: white
Flowering month: IV
Evergreen plant: No
Density on 1 m2: 1
Annual growth: 0,5 m
Aspect: do
Frost hardiness: Zones 3 - 8

A prettily blooming fruiting shrub. In spring it is covered with pale pink flowers. It is also recommended due to its tasty fruit, ripening in July. It is suitable for container cultivation.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Leaves medium-sized, serrate; in autumn turn red. Flowers 3 cm across, pale pink, numerous. In bloom in III and IV. Edible, juicy fruits set on very short pedicles along the shoots’ whole length. Tasty, sweet-sour; ripening in VII.

HOW IT GROWS: a shrub of spreading, straight shoots. Reaches 2 m in height and in width.

WHERE TO PLANT: An undemanding plant. Grows and yields fruit best in sunny sites. Tolerates average, well-drained soil of neutral or slightly acidic pH. Withstands draught. Highly hardy (zone 3-8).

HOW TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN: Before planting immerse the plant container in water for 10-30 min.  Place the root ball in a 60 x 60 x 60 cm hole with a 10 cm layer of well-rotten manure. Fill the hole with fertile compost soil. Flatten the earth around the plant and cover with bark mulch. Place the root ball as deep as it was in the container. Fertilize from April and water adequately during growing season. The shrub does not require regular pruning. A light pruning can be performed once the plant thickens after a couple of seasons. Excessive pruning limits the fruitification. It’s recommended to plant a couple of shrubs in a group.

HOW TO APPLY: An all-purpose plant suitable for house gardens (both in natural and Japanese style) as well as in park settings. The fruit may be eaten raw or used for making jams, compotes and tinctures.

ORIGIN: Occurs in natural sites in China, Korea, Mongolia and North India.
