Clematis 'Sophie' |
Charming, elegant Japanese cultivar of bell-shaped, nodding flowers, 1.5-2 cm in diameter consisting of 4 violet sepals with lighter margins and pointy, strongly curled tips on long, purple pedicles. On the outside of the sepals there are 3 delicate ribs, the inside is violet-pink, lighter towards the base, nearly white around the stamens which consist of yellow anthers on white filaments. Flowers are borne for a long time – from May till October - on this year's wood. It clears up nicely after the flowers have faded. Single or trifoliate leaves, 12 cm long and 14 cm wide, with leaflets ususally lanceloate, sometimes clefted. New shoots are purple then green, and turn brown when mature. The plant reaches 80 cm height. It doesn't climb over supports but can lean on them. |
