Climbing Hydrangea GREEN RACER®

Latin name: Hydrangea anomala GREEN RACER®
English name: Climbing Hydrangea GREEN RACER®
DECORATION FORM: leaves
Evergreen plant: No
Density on 1 m2: 2-4
Annual growth: 1 m
Aspect: do
Frost hardiness: Zones 5 - 7

A compact but fast growing cultivar of heart-shaped or ovate leaves. Flowers gathered in umbels open in June and July. Frost hardy, undemanding and disease and pest resistant, particularly recommended for small gardens.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Leaves decorative, smallish, 4-6 cm across, green, heart-shaped or ovate, lacklustre on the top, white-green underneath, set on long petioles; margins serrated. Shoots orange-brown when mature, green and slightly furry when new.

HOW IT GROWS: Vine climbing by aerial roots. Relatively fast growing, reaches 2-3 m height with an annual growth rate of 0.5 m.

WHERE TO PLANT: Prefers shade or semi-shade and moist but not waterlogged soil. Survives also on poor land and in droughty periods of time. The cultivar is pest and disease resistant, frost hardy (Zone 5-7).

HOW TO PLANT AND MAINTAIN: Before planting immerse the plant container in water for 10-30 min. Place the plant in a 40 x 40 x 40 cm hole covered at the bottom with a 10 cm layer of well-rotten manure or compost, 0.5-1 cm deeper than it was before. Fill in the hole with fertile soil. Plant at least 30 cm from walls or other plants. Cover the ground around the new plants with bark mulch. Fertilize from April and water in vegetative season. Does not require pruning, but formative cutting is  beneficial.

HOW TO APPLY: The climber particularly recommended for small gardens, rock gardens, also for growing over stone walls or single rocks.  Excellent for creating live covers of small spaces.

ORIGIN: Selected by Szczepan Marczyński out of plants found in natural sites in Japan. Introduced in the market by Clematis The Source of Good Climbers, Poland in 2015.
